Most Common Sinus Surgeries/Treatments

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

  • The most common type of sinus surgery.
  • Uses an endoscope (a small camera) to remove blockages in the sinuses.
  • Helps improve airflow and drainage.
  • Minimally invasive with a quick recovery time.

Balloon Sinuplasty

  • A less invasive alternative to FESS.
  • A small balloon is inserted into the sinus opening and inflated to widen the passage.
  • No tissue removal; usually done in-office.
  • Short recovery time with minimal discomfort.

Septoplasty

  • Performed to straighten a deviated septum (the cartilage and bone between the nostrils).
  • Can improve breathing and sinus drainage.
  • Often combined with other sinus procedures.

Turbinate Reduction (Inferior Turboplasty)

  • Reduces the size of the turbinates (structures in the nose that filter and humidify air).
  • Helps relieve nasal congestion and improves airflow.
  • Can be done with radiofrequency or surgical removal.

Sinus Ostial Dilation

  • Similar to balloon sinuplasty but focuses on opening the natural drainage pathways of the sinuses.
  • Can be done using specialized instruments or balloons.

Clarifix

  • A minimally invasive medical treatment used to treat chronic rhinitis (runny nose)
  • Reduces chronic runny nose and nasal congestion
  • Provides long-lasting relief, typically lasting for several months to years
  • Minimally invasive, with minimal downtime
  • Performed in an office setting, usually taking less than an hour

Wesley D Vander Ark, MD - ENT Surgery Group

Wesley D Vander Ark, MD

After deciding to become a physician and entering medical school, I found that I was better suited for a surgical specialty. I’ve always liked working with my hands, and I was drawn to that aspect of medicine, particularly microscopic surgery (microsurgery).

What attracted me to ear, nose, and throat medicine was the chance to focus on a smaller body area filled with significant complexity requiring both medical and surgical treatments. I appreciate the fact that Otolaryngology isn’t just a surgical subspecialty.

While narrow in its scope, it is diverse with various conditions that demand a range of knowledge, skills, and treatment techniques. My mission is to provide the best possible care for every ear, nose, and throat complaint. It isn’t just about surgery; it’s about caring and compassion, too. I have a true desire to help people and provide them with meaningful solutions for their ENT complaints. It’s why I became a doctor, and it’s why I put my heart into treating my patients.

What interested me in medicine was the ability to help others and truly positively influence their health. In some cases, medical management is appropriate; surgical intervention is the more appropriate choice in other cases. I was drawn to ear, nose, and throat medicine in part because it combines these aspects. Another reason is that, as a specialist, I quite frequently can make a real difference for people who have been unable to get the help they need.

At times, these specialized cases are challenging, but I enjoy being challenged. I especially enjoy overcoming those challenges and providing solutions for people who need them. In addition, I make a point of making a diagnosis and treatment understandable for you and putting you at ease. After that, I put every ounce of my training and personal dedication into helping you get the relief you need.
